NRWMF Community Ballot

Council had agreed to facilitate a vote through the Australian Electoral Commission for a ballot on the proposed National Radioactive Waste Management Facility on Wallerberdina Station. The ballot question will be “Do you support the proposed National Radioactive Waste Management Facility in your community?”.

The information papers that Council requested be made available to the community are all available here: http://www.radioactivewaste.gov.au/site-selection-process/key-documents-and-faqs

At its Ordinary Meeting held  20 August 2019, Council formally resolved as follows:

Moved Councillor Reynolds, Seconded Councillor Woolford

That Council authorise the Administration to liaise with the Honourable Matthew Canavan, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, to obtain funding to advance the Councils independent SWOT analysis and risk assessment regarding the proposed National Radioactive Waste Management Facility; and

That conditional upon Commonwealth Funding and the completion of the SWOT analysis and risk assessment, that Council proceed with the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility ballot to be undertaken by the Australian Electoral Commission, on the basis that the ballot will be funded by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.

CARRIED (194/2019)

As outlined in the Mayor's Message in recent Council Newsletters, arrangements are being made to facilitate the ballot as soon as the SWOT Analysis and Risk Assessment have been completed.

This process has now concluded and the Report has been released for the community's information and reference. A copy of the Report can be viewed or dowloaded here: NRWMF SWOT Analysis & Risk Assessment Report(765 kb)

A copy of the Mayor's Media Release announcing the public release of the report is available here: Media Release - NRWMF Risk Assessment Report(126 kb)

The Roll for the Ballot closed on Friday 18 October 2019 and has now been finalised and is based on that used for Council elections which includes people on the House of Assembly Electoral Roll and those on Council's Supplemetary Roll. The Ballot Roll also includes persons residing outside of the Council area who live within a 50km radius of the proposed site who have registered. The Outback Communities Authority wrote to all of these people and provided them with information (including forms) on how they could register to be included on the Roll and in the Ballot.

For residents and ratepayers of The Flinders Ranges Council, if you are uncertain as to whether you are currently eligible to vote in Council elections and subsequently to participate in the Ballot, please contact the Council office and it can be checked for you.

Ballot Papers are expected to be mailed out on and from Monday 11 November 2019.
